Unakite is a distinctive composite rock rather than a single mineral. It is composed primarily of pink Orthoclase Feldspar, green Epidote, and clear to gray Quartz, giving it its characteristic mottled appearance.
The stone was first identified in the Unaka Mountain range of North Carolina and Tennessee in the United States, from which it derives its name. Since then, Unakite has been found in several other regions around the world.
Unakite commonly forms as a metamorphosed granite, where hydrothermal alteration introduces Epidote into existing Feldspar-Quartz structures. This process gives Unakite its unique coloration and balanced mineral composition.
Due to its durability and attractive coloring, Unakite has been widely used as an ornamental stone in carvings, beads, cabochons, and architectural features.
Major sources of Unakite include the United States, South Africa, Brazil, China, and parts of Europe.
From a metaphysical perspective, Unakite is traditionally regarded as a stone of gentle healing and emotional balance.
Unakite is classified as an altered granite or granitic pegmatite. It forms when original granite undergoes hydrothermal metamorphism, replacing some of the feldspar with Epidote while retaining Quartz.
The presence of Epidote indicates conditions of moderate temperature and pressure during alteration, often associated with tectonic activity or fluid-rich environments.
