Septarian is a unique and visually striking stone formed from ancient mud concretions that cracked and filled with mineral-rich solutions over millions of years. Its characteristic patterns—often resembling dragon scales or ancient maps—have earned it the nickname “Dragon Stone.”
Septarian formed during the Cretaceous period, approximately 50–70 million years ago, when volcanic activity combined with marine sedimentation. As organic matter decayed inside these nodules, gases caused the surrounding mud to crack. Over time, these cracks filled with minerals such as calcite, aragonite, and limestone.
Notable sources of Septarian include Madagascar, USA (Utah), England, and parts of Europe. Madagascan Septarian is especially prized for its bold contrast and polished forms.
Septarian is not a single mineral but a composite stone formed from multiple geological processes. The name “Septarian” refers to the cracks (septaria) that divide the stone into distinct segments.
