Purple Fluorite Origins & Background

Purple Fluorite is one of the most widely recognized and versatile color varieties within the Fluorite family. Its coloration ranges from pale lavender through rich violet and deep royal purple, sometimes occurring with zoning, banding, or combinations with clear, green, or blue Fluorite.

Purple Fluorite is sourced from several major Fluorite-producing regions, including China, Mexico, England, South Africa, and the United States. Many Purple Fluorite specimens on the market are cut and polished, as the color and translucency lend themselves particularly well to spheres, pyramids, octahedrons, and massage tools.

As part of the Fluorite family, Purple Fluorite carries the core properties of mental clarity and learning, while expressing a more healing-focused and meditative character.

Purple Fluorite Geological Information

Purple Fluorite is composed of calcium fluoride (CaF₂) and crystallizes in the isometric (cubic) crystal system. Its purple coloration is caused by trace impurities and structural defects within the crystal lattice, often influenced by natural radiation exposure during formation.

Like all Fluorite varieties, Purple Fluorite forms most commonly in hydrothermal vein systems, often alongside Quartz, Calcite, Barite, and metallic sulfides. Fluorite’s relatively low hardness allows for well-defined crystal faces and smooth polished forms, but also results in perfect cleavage along four directions.
