Carnelian is a vibrant orange to reddish-orange variety of Chalcedony Quartz, prized since antiquity for its warm color, vitality, and unmistakable presence. It has been used for thousands of years in seals, amulets, jewelry, and talismans across Egyptian, Roman, Greek, and Middle Eastern cultures.
True natural Carnelian is comparatively rare. Historically, it was valued not only for its beauty but also for its perceived ability to strengthen courage, life force, and creative power. Ancient warriors often carried Carnelian into battle, believing it enhanced bravery and resolve.
Notable natural sources of genuine Carnelian include Madagascar, India, and New Zealand. New Zealand Carnelian, in particular, is something of a standout — deeply saturated, honest in character, and very transucent.
Important note: Over 90% of “Carnelian” commonly sold in crystal shops worldwide is actually heat-treated Agate, most often from Brazil. While heat-treated Agate can be beautiful in its own right, it is geologically and energetically distinct from true Carnelian. At Majestic Quartz, Carnelian is carefully selected and accurately represented — no heat-treated Agate passed off as the real thing.
Carnelian is a microcrystalline form of Quartz (Silicon Dioxide – SiO₂) belonging to the Chalcedony family. Its characteristic orange to red coloration is caused by finely dispersed iron oxide within the silica structure.
Unlike heat-treated Agate, natural Carnelian develops its color during formation rather than through artificial enhancement. This natural coloration is often more subtle, layered, and internally complex than its heated counterparts.
