Bloodstone, also known as Heliotrope, is a variety of Chalcedony Quartz distinguished by its deep green body color and characteristic red inclusions. These red markings are caused by iron oxide, most commonly Hematite, dispersed throughout the stone.
The name “Heliotrope” originates from Greek, meaning “to turn the sun,” reflecting ancient beliefs that Bloodstone had a connection to vitality, life force, and solar energy. Historically, Bloodstone has been used as a talisman for courage, protection, and endurance across many cultures.
Major sources of Bloodstone include India, Brazil, Australia, China, and parts of the United States. Indian Bloodstone, in particular, has been widely used for both ornamental and metaphysical purposes for centuries.
Bloodstone typically forms in massive, opaque structures rather than distinct crystal points, making it well suited to carving, polishing, and use in practical tools such as wands, palm stones, and talismans.
Bloodstone is a microcrystalline variety of Quartz (Silicon Dioxide – SiO₂) belonging to the Chalcedony group. Its green coloration is typically due to Chlorite or other iron-bearing minerals, while the red spots and streaks are caused by iron oxide inclusions, most commonly Hematite.
Bloodstone forms in silica-rich environments, often within sedimentary or volcanic host rocks where iron-rich fluids were present during formation.
