Purpurite Origins & Background
Purpurite is a striking purple to violet mineral best known for its bold, matte coloration and intense presence. It was first described in the early 20th century and derives its name from the Latin purpura, meaning purple.
Purpurite forms as a secondary mineral through the alteration of lithium-rich phosphates, most commonly originating from lithiophilite-bearing pegmatites. It is most often sourced from Namibia, Mozambique, South Africa, and select pegmatite regions worldwide.
Unlike many polished or translucent crystals, Purpurite is typically found in earthy, fibrous, or massive forms. Its raw, uncompromising appearance is very much part of its identity and appeal.
Purpurite Geological Information
Purpurite is a manganese iron phosphate mineral that forms through surface-level oxidation and alteration processes. It is not a primary crystal-growth mineral but rather a transformation product, which contributes to both its texture and energetic symbolism.
