Sugilite is a relatively rare and highly prized mineral, first identified in 1944 by Japanese petrologist Ken-ichi Sugi, after whom it was named. It gained wider recognition in the crystal and mineral world much later, when vivid purple material was discovered in South Africa.
The finest and most energetically sought-after Sugilite comes from the Kalahari Manganese Field in South Africa. This material is often associated with manganese-rich host rock and may appear as massive, veined, or nodular formations rather than distinct crystal points.
Sugilite’s striking purple coloration and powerful metaphysical reputation have made it a cornerstone stone for advanced spiritual and healing work.
Sugilite is a complex cyclosilicate mineral containing potassium, sodium, lithium, iron, manganese, and aluminum. It crystallizes in the hexagonal system but is most commonly found in massive form rather than well-formed crystals.
Its purple coloration can range from soft lavender to deep royal purple, often with black manganese matrix or lighter pink and violet mottling.
