Key Quartz, also known as Keyhole Quartz, is a rare and visually distinctive Quartz formation characterized by a keyhole-shaped cavity embedded within the crystal. These cavities are often hexagonal in outline and may show stepped or terraced recesses that appear to recede inward toward the body of the crystal.
Keyholes form when a secondary Quartz crystal grows attached to the side of a larger “mother” crystal and later detaches naturally. The separation may occur due to changes in growth conditions, tectonic movement, or shifts in pressure and temperature within the formation environment. What remains is a precise negative impression of the former crystal—effectively a natural mold or imprint.
Key Quartz can occur in many Quartz varieties, including Clear Quartz, Smoky Quartz, Amethyst, and included forms. Because the conditions required to form, attach, and then naturally remove a secondary crystal are uncommon, true Key Quartz specimens are relatively rare.
