Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed when molten lava cools so rapidly that it does not have time to crystallize. This sudden “freezing in time” gives Obsidian its powerful reputation as a truth-revealer and mirror stone—reflecting what is present without dilution or embellishment.
Used by ancient cultures for tools, weapons, mirrors, and spiritual rites, Obsidian has always been associated with protection, shadow work, and deep personal transformation. Its energy is direct, uncompromising, and effective—making it a crystal best worked with consciously and respectfully.
Obsidian occurs in many visually distinct varieties, each shaped by subtle differences in mineral content, gas bubbles, and cooling conditions during formation.
Obsidian is an amorphous volcanic glass primarily composed of silicon dioxide (SiO₂), similar in chemistry to Quartz but lacking a crystalline structure. Its glassy nature gives it sharp conchoidal fractures and a distinctive vitreous luster.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Rock Type | Volcanic glass |
| Chemical Composition | SiO₂ (with trace elements) |
| Crystal Structure | Amorphous (non-crystalline) |
| Hardness (Mohs Scale) | 5–5.5 |
| Luster | Vitreous |
| Fracture | Conchoidal (very sharp) |
Major sources include Mexico, the United States, Iceland, Armenia, and parts of South America.
⚠️ Handling:
Obsidian can have very sharp edges when raw. Handle with care and avoid dropping.
🧼 Cleaning:
Water-safe for brief rinsing. Dry thoroughly to maintain surface luster.
☀️ Light:
Light-stable. Polished surfaces may show fingerprints easily.
📦 Storage & Display:
Store separately from softer stones to avoid scratching. Ideal near entrances or personal spaces for protective purposes.

Rainbow Obsidian is a naturally occurring volcanic glass formed from rapidly cooled lava rich in silica. The iridescent rainbow sheen visible beneath its dark surface is caused by microscopic layers and inclusions that reflect light at specific angles.
Unlike banded or snowflake obsidian, Rainbow Obsidian typically appears black until viewed under strong light or at the correct angle, where vivid flashes of green, purple, gold, or blue become visible.
Significant sources of Rainbow Obsidian include Mexico (particularly Jalisco), the United States, and parts of Central America. Mexican material is especially prized for its strong and clearly defined color play.
Historically, obsidian has been used for tools, mirrors, ceremonial objects, and protective talismans due to its sharp fracture, reflective qualities, and durability.
Metaphysically, Rainbow Obsidian is traditionally associated with gentle emotional revelation, combining the protective qualities of Obsidian with a more nurturing and uplifting expression.
Rainbow Obsidian forms when silica-rich lava cools extremely rapidly, preventing the formation of a crystalline structure. The rainbow effect results from internal layers of nanoscale mineral inclusions that refract and reflect light.
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Material Type | Volcanic glass |
| Chemical Composition | Primarily SiO₂ |
| Crystal System | Amorphous |
| Hardness (Mohs) | 5 – 5.5 |
| Luster | Vitreous |
| Transparency | Opaque |
| Fracture | Conchoidal |
Rainbow Obsidian is softer than quartz and should be handled with care, particularly along edges which can be sharp.
🧼 Cleaning:
Clean gently using a soft cloth. Avoid prolonged water soaking and never use ultrasonic cleaners.
📦 Storage:
Store separately from harder minerals to prevent surface scratching. Cushion edges to avoid chipping.
☀️ Light:
Stable in normal lighting conditions. Avoid excessive heat exposure.
